about

I approached the idea to play solo clarinet inside St Mary’s Basilica in Geelong with an intent of being open and receptive to the sacred space. I had attended a number of performances and had recently facilitated a Meditation session there. Throughout these experiences, I felt embraced and surrounded by the echo-rich reverberation of the Basilica. The resonating stone and wood comforted me, massaging me with gentle waves of sound and vibration.

I was hoping to play improvised solo clarinet for a few hours into the night. Access was sought and permission was gratefully received. While a truly late night session, commencing around midnight, was not ultimately possible, I was able to have the space to myself from 5-9pm on a still, cold night in April 2017. In the near-CBD location, traffic noise was occasionally quite obvious. In my practise as a field recording engineer I prefer to leave anthropogenic sounds in - however, for the purposes of this recording these were minimised to whatever extent possible as I wish to maintain the listener's immersion in the sonic space. Somehow, the atmospheric sounds brought me closer to the building and its placement in the world - an edifice surrounded by a busy city. I felt safe and secure with the world rushing past the outer walls.

Upon settling into a comfortable nook, I began intoning. My sounds were seeking permission to explore and reveal the hidden properties of the space. I listened and responded as if the space was another musician. I was guided through an improvisatory journey, exploring which notes, passages, dynamics, instrument registers and their associated timbres drew sonically mesmerising responses. Pauses and silence were equally important in creating this sonic relationship. Responding to the structure and identifying it's basic vibrations helped me feel at one with the building and all it held. Resonating tones, reverberations and gentle silence became my comfort and deepest, unconditional friend.
